PET口语系列 -- 5 Ways to Compare and Contrast in English

5 Ways to Compare and Contrast in English

      •      How to talk about big differences
      •      How to talk about very close similarities
      •      How to talk about small differences
      •      How to talk about similarities
      •      Making a longer answer

1 How to talk about big differences

[*]They’re totally/so different.
[*]It’s hard/impossible to compare them.
[*]They’re (almost) nothing alike.

Everything moves (so) much faster.

The museum was so / way much more interesting than I expected.

Q: Which is better, morning or afternoon? (Why?)

A: I think the afternoon is way better.

2 How to talk about very close similarities

[*]They’re so alike.
[*]I can hardly tell them apart.
[*]They look so similar.
[*]They’re equally funny.
[*]A is just as impatient as B.

[*]I can hardly tell these two wines apart.
[*]I hated both cities; they’re equally terrible.
[*]Playing golf is just as boring as watching it.

3 How to talk about small differences

在比较级之前加修饰语,例如a bit, a little, slightly等。

[*]They played a bit better.
[*]They were just a little sharper.
[*]The keeper did slightly better.
[*]not quite as… as…

2020,Part 4
Q: Which do you think is more interesting: visiting the countryside or visiting a city?
A: I think visiting a city is not quite as interesting as visiting the countryside.

4 How to talk about similarities

[*]The dishes didn’t vary much.
[*]Everything tasted much the same.
[*]The main dishes were all pretty similar.
[*]It was more or less like tonight.
[*]It was nearly as expensive as that Japanese place we went to for my birthday.

[*]Apartments here don’t vary much.
[*]You can do it today or tomorrow—it’s much the same to me.
[*]A lot of cities / small towns in China are pretty similar.
[*]There are different versions of rugby, but the basic idea is more or less the same.
[*]My sister is almost as tall as me now!

5 Making a longer answer
